What will you be?
"So tell me mr so-and-so
what is it that you do?"
adults are always asking when
they meet somebody new.
And when they meet a child they ask:
“what is it you will be --
When you grow up, from small to tall,
and you're as old as me?”
Oh why must grown-up conversations
always turn to occupations,
Or are they looking for inspiration
to recall their own dreams?
And why are grown-ups so intent
on learning how one pays the rent?
Unless they hope to reinvent
just whom they choose to be.
So me, when I meet someone new,
I never ask them what they do;
Instead I ask their point of view
On something dear to me:
Like honeybees, and climbing trees,
and things that make you laugh,
And favorite books, and hiding nooks,
and gerbils vs giraffes.
My job today? To learn and play
And help you do the same.
So sit with me, and tell me please,
now what’s your favorite game?
